Hypertension and Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in Nigeria. The prevalence of cardiovascular disease in Nigeria and African countries is rising every year. There is an up rise of heart diseases in 7- 10 percent of the population of Nigeria. High blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, being overweight, low levels of HDL are some of the factors which increase the risk of heart diseases.

What Exactly Is Coronary Heart Disease?

Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease which is also the leading cause of death in Nigeria. Coronary artery disease occurs when the arteries which that supply blood to the heart muscles becomes narrowed and hard due to the buildup of cholesterol and other material in the inner walls. This build up is called as atherosclerosis. With time as the buildup grows, it obstructs the flow of blood through the arteries.

As a result, the heart muscle does not get the blood or oxygen it needs which leads to pain chest or heart attack. Most heart attacks occur when the blood clot suddenly cuts off the hearts’ blood supply, causing permanent heart damage. With time coronary artery disease can also weaken the heart muscle and contribute to heart failure and arrhythmias.

Symptoms of Coronary Heart Disease

The most common symptom of coronary artery disease is angina or chest pain. Angina can also be described as a feeling of aching, fullness, burning, heaviness, pressure, numbness, or squeezing. Angina can often be mistaken for indigestion or heartburn. Symptoms of Angina are often subtle in women such as shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or fatigue. Other symptoms of coronary artery disease can be palpitations, nausea, weakness, sweating, dizziness or shortness of breath.

Lifestyle Changes

  • Exercise regularly
  • Quit smoking

Drugs

Following drugs are used to treat coronary heart disease:-

  • Nitroglycerin medicines help in controlling chest pain by temporarily dilating the coronary arteries and reducing the heart’s demand for blood.
  • Aspirin or other blood thinner medicines are used to reduce the tendency of blood clots which helps in preventing obstruction of coronary arteries.
  • Cholesterol-modifying medications are given to decrease the amount of cholesterol in the blood.
  • Beta blockers medicines slows the heart rate and decrease the blood pressure. This medicine also reduces the risk of future attacks.

Surgical Procedures

Following surgical procedures are performed to restore and improve the flow of blood to the heart:-

Angioplasty and Stent Placement (percutaneous coronary revascularization):- While performing angioplasty and stent placement, the cardiac surgeon inserts a long, thin tube into the narrowed part of the artery. A wire with a deflated balloon is passed through the catheter to the narrowed area. The balloon attached to the narrowed area is then inflated which compressing the deposits against the artery walls. Depending on the patients and severity of their condition the stent is left in the artery to keep the artery open. Some of these stents slowly release medication to help keep the artery open.

Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: – To perform coronary artery bypass surgery, the surgeon creates a graft to bypass blocked coronary arteries using a vessel from another part of the body. The bypass allows the blood to flow around the blocked or narrowed coronary artery. Coronary artery bypass surgery often requires open-heart surgery which is why this procedure is most often reserved for cases of multiple narrowed coronary arteries.
