Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion Surgery (TLIF)

Transforaminal-Lumbar-Interbody-Fusion-(TLIF)-Back-SurgeryWhat is the procedure for TLIF surgery?

A transforaminal lumbar interbody surgery is another method of spinal fusion procedure. This is used to treat painful vertebras in the person’s spinal column.

Spinal fusion is the surgical method used to fuse, or ‘weld’, together two or more painful consecutively placed vertebras so as to make them a single bone by restricting their movements completely.

An interbody fusion is a method involves the removal of the cushioning disc (lumbar disc) from between two vertebras. The empty space created by the removal of the vertebral disc is filled by placing a bone spacer (bone graft) or an artificial spacer (made from plastic or metal). These spacers help promote bone grafting between the two consecutive vertebras. The surgeon will usually fix the spacers in place using metal screws, plates and rods to help stabilize the spinal column till bone fusion gets completed between the vertebras.

The transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) surgical technique requires the surgeon to approach the spine from a side so as to avoid coming in excessive contact with the vital nerves in the spinal column. The surgeon will then remove the damaged vertebral disc from between two vertebras and replace it with either a bone graft or a ‘spacer’ implant made from plastic or metal. The ‘spacer’ is fixed in place with the help of surgical screws, plates or rods to help stabilize the two consecutive vertebras as well as to promote bone fusion between them.

Success Rates and Risks of the TLIF Surgery

The success rate of a transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) surgery is very high compared to other methods of spinal fusion surgeries. Around 60%-70% patients experience relief from back pain and around 80% are completely satisfied with the overall results.

The TLIF surgery is advantageous because:

  • Bone fusion is faster as the bone graft or ‘spacer’ implanted between the vertebras is fitted along the ‘grooves’ of the spine and also covers the disc space.
  • The ‘spacer’ implants replace the vertebral disc but provide normal height and also relieves any pressure from the nerve roots in the spinal column.
  • TLIF approach is from the side and this helps to avoid disturbing the nerve roots as much as possible which results in no nervous complications later due to the surgery.
