What you need to know about Artificial Testicular Implant

An artificial testicular implant is actually a cosmetic surgery that aims to replace one, or both testicles using a man-made testicular prosthesis that is similar in appearance to a natural testicle. This is useful to restore the normal appearance of the scrotum as well as avoid many psychological complications that may arise in a person due to missing testicles.

This treatment is also known as ‘testis prosthesis’ or ‘testicular implant’ and as well as ‘prosthetic testicle’. The artificial implant is molded from a synthetic material (usually silicone) and is filled with sterile saline water to give it a shape, size and texture which is similar to a natural testicle. This artificial implant is designed with a self-sealing hole at one end which is used to fill the implant with saline water after the device is implanted and the other end consists of a tab which is useful for securing the implant into the scrotum.

Need for Artificial Testicular Implant

An artificial testicular prosthetic implant is needed to replace a removed, or missing, testicle, which is not only advantageous from a cosmetic aspect but is also needed to boost the patient’s confidence and self-esteem.

This surgery is required usually after the patient suffers torsion or twisting of the testis, traumatic injury to the testis as well as after a treatment for testicular cancer requires removal of the testicles as part of the treatment process.

This implant procedure is also ideal for children who suffer from an undescended testicular condition and the conventional treatment methods for it have been unsuccessful in treating it. It is also advised in cases where the patient’s testicles are too small or are non-functional to get a testicular implant done.

Artificial Testicular Implant Procedure

The artificial testicular implant surgery is one of the cosmetic surgeries that are used to restore the appearance of the scrotum that has one, or both testicles missing due to an injury, congenital (birth) defect or due to any other reason (testicular cancer treatment).

The surgeon will administer general anesthesia to avoid discomfort and pain to the patient during the surgical procedure. An incision is made in the upper scrotal region that spares the muscles in the scrotum and is far from the implant site. After the incision is made, the surgeon will create a small scrotal pouch and use sutures to attach the artificial testicular implant device in place using the tab at the end of the device.

The artificial testicular implant device is completely sterilized before the surgery with antibiotic solution then filled with sterile saline water. Then the surgeon will finally place the implant in its required position.

This is a comparatively shorter procedure and requires around 2-3 hours of operating time to get completed.

Risks associated with Artificial Testicular Implant

As is seen in any form of major surgery the artificial testicular implant procedure also carries certain risks, especially those that are related to the surgical part of it, such as:

  • Infection at incision site
  • Internal bleeding (hemorrhaging)
  • Numbness/pain in scrotum
  • Implant rejection
  • Scar tissue

Advantages of Artificial Testicular Implant

The main advantage of an artificial testicular implant is that it restores the normal appearance of the scrotum after one, or both testicles had to be removed due to an injury, congenital (birth) abnormality or after a testicular cancer treatment requiring the removal of the patient’s testicles.

Another added advantage of this cosmetic procedure is that it helps to significantly boost the patient’s self-esteem and confidence that is mostly affected in such a condition.
